100 years ago this summer, King Oliver opted to go to Chicago after the Ory-Oliver band was busted by the cops in a raid at the Wintergarden
Theatre on s. Rampart street. Ory wanted to hire Louis Armstrong, but he was just 17. If only Louis could find a way to make people think he was already 18 and legal to play in bars....and with that a myth was born.
Barbara Effros I've read his Baptismal card has a different date. It's very possible you are correct.
