A photo exhibition entitled "After-war jazz" is now (September 2011) open in Rouen, a city situated close to the Channel.
It shows 20 black and white photos shot by Charles Delaquaize (aka Burchell). These photos were taken at the Cirque, an ancient circus built in 1894, which was used after WWII as a concert hall, and eventually destroyed in 1973.
The acts featured on these photos are the likes of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Mezz Mezzrow, and KID ORY!
During his 1956 European tour, Kid Ory played at Le Cirque in Rouen on September 25th, 1956. This concert is not, to the best of our knowledge, documented anywhere else.
The attached photos were all taken at Le Cirque, except for 2 which were taken during a signing at the record shop "Confort et musique".
We also join a photo of Le Cirque, as it looked on an old postcard, from before WWII. This is one of the very view surviving sights of Le Cirque as it was in these pre-war days.
