20 SEPTEMBER 1959 IN HAMBURG - CONCERT IN ERNST MERCK HALLE

Kid Ory told us, that he always uses his mute in 'Tiger Rag'. One of us asked: "how does it sound, Kid?" Kid looked at him, as if the questioner was one of the stupidest human beings in the world, shook his head and said: "Like a tiger Man, like a tiger, what else????".
As promised, Kid Ory came to the jazzclub after the concert. The Club we played in at that time was called "Mummekeller", it was in the City in a street called Großer Burstah. It does not exist anymore, was demolished in 1960. Ory told us stories until early in the morning. It was interesting to hear, that he liked the recordings with the New Orleans Wanderers better than the Hot Five ones. 'You don't need a star in the New Orleans Style' he said. But of cause, he liked Louis. 'Nothing could go wrong with Louis!" and he told us, that sometimes Louis rang him up before a recording session in the evening ans asked: "Kid, can you write one or two numbers for our session tomorrow?" So Ory wrote Savoy Blues and Muskrat Ramble, just in the night before the recording session!
Best wishes from Hamburg Abbi - The old Man with a Horn - You can listen to one or the other number I play with my band when you just enter internet Google with Abbi Hübner or You tube. We play "Till we meet again", San Jacinto Hall Stomp" ,Buena Sera, with the Band, that now exists, Panama Rag (in 1974).
