In Hamburg, the rehearsal was held in Musik Halle (now changed to Laeiszhalle).

In Hamburg, Kid Ory stayed at the Atlantic Hotel on Holzdamm Strasse (street). The Jailhouse Jazzmen soon found out the location and waited on the sidewalk opposite the hotel.

Abbi Hübner, the trumpet player of Jailhouse Jazzmen tells the following story for Christer Fellers.

In the afternoon before the concert, Kid Ory´s band had a rehearsal in Musik Halle. Marcel Horst visited this session together with his trombone player Rudgar Mumssen. A friend of Marcel Horst took the following nice photos of the band during the rehearsal.

Dear Christer, one of the great events of my Life was to meet with Kid Ory,in 1959. We went to the hotel Atlantic, where he had checked in, called him up, and when we heard his voice at the telefon we could hardly whisper: "O, Mr. Ory, we are here with an Hamburgian Jazzband and we would like to play a few song for You in front of your hotel!" - He replied: "I'll be down in a minute!!" We had build up on the opposite side of the Atlantic Hotel and when he rushed out of the door we started to play Muskrat Ramble. He was so excited, that he crossed the street without minding the cars and was nearly hit by an automobile!! I saw the Headline in the Newspapers: "Kid Ory killed by Abbi Hübner's Jailhouse Jazzmen!" -

When we finished the number, he asked for Savoy Blues!

After we had played Muskrat Ramble and Savoy Blues, the police arrived because some people had alarmed them because they didn´t like the 'noise'. The police stopped our playing and started discussing with us, we told them, why we had played there, in order to welcome a famous american Jazz pioneer. The police really did not believe us and our tuba player laughed through his instrument an made funny sounds, sounds you only can hear on WC. Therefore he was arrested and the police ordered him to enter their car. He warned them, because - as he said - he would have to take his sousaphone with him, which he thought was too big to fit through the police car door. Nevertheless, the police officer told him, to get into the car and -----bummmmmm!!!!!!!! he crashed with his sousaphone against the car and hit a big bump into the car. Kid roared with laughter "The corporal has no humour, It's the same all over the world, the police are never noted for their sense of humour!"

After we had played, Ory promised to come to our club that night, when he had finished his concert, and, to our surprise, he did!! He didn´t play with us, because he had contracts to fullfil, that wouldn't allow this, but he stayed with us and told storys till the early morning next day.

Obviously it did get too hot for the “Arch father” of Jazz, Kid Ory, at the rehearsals in the Musik Halle before his concert on to-days Sunday at the Ernst-Merck-Halle. So he went on a discovery trip with his soloists in Old Hamburg. Have these musicians grown together so much with their instruments, that they don’t want to miss them there? The Camera met the Creole Jazz Band at the historic “Backerbreitengang” where the band  soon was surrounded by an audience of experts.

Kid Ory, the veteran from old New Orleans.

A joy for jazz friends ! On Sunday (20 september) at 20.00, Kid Ory´s Creole Jazz Band plays in the Ernst-Merck Halle. Edward Ory, nickname Kid given to him by his friends, is the oldest, still living musician from old New Orleans. With his 73 years he still plays his trombone like he has done for the past 50 years: raw, forceful, in cooperation with with the band and in harmony.  Henry Red Allen also belongs to the very old veterans from New Orleans.
