SBJS´ ANNUAL MEETING 2015

On May 30th 2015 two major events took place in a rather dull and rainy Stockholm: the Stockholm Marathon and the annual meeting of the Swedish Bunk Johnson Society. How many thousands the Stockhom Marathon attracted I don´t know but at the annual meeting of our society we were 39 Bunk fans. This year we gathered in very nice premises in the southern part of Stockholm City, called Södermalm.

After the formal society matters, as always as short as possible, pianist, orchestra leader, jazz historian, and writer Ingemar Wågerman gave us the story of Alton Purnell, familiar to us all by his recordings with Bunk and George Lewis. Ingemar really has made an imposing research in Alton´s life and times and is planning a book, probably in digital form. Unfortunately you´ll not find a printed book on Alton on the top selling lists Ingemar presumed.

After Ingemar´s most interesting lecture our new Chef Per Oldaeus treated us with the number one dish of Louisiana: Red Beans and Rice.

Bo Sherman gave us a short information on the jazz travels Travel Gallery with Bo as a guide is arranging to New Orleans, New York and Chicago this year. These travels are highly recommended by yours truly, who plans to go the French Quarter Festival with Bo next year. More information you find on www.travelgallery.se .

Then the time had come for Jan Lorentzon´s Jazz Quiz. I don´t know how Jan makes it, but the Quiz is harder for every year. This year the Quiz had two sections: identify year and city for eight Bunk recordings and name twelve Swedish traditional bands playing tunes also recorded by Bunk. The winner of the Quiz this year was Lennart Fält, the accountant of our society. We were all impressed by Lennart´s outstanding knowledge.

Before the live music started Lars Falk interviewed Per Oldaeus on Per´s recently published book on Professor Longhair, the legendary New Orleans Rhythm ´n ´ Blues musician. Surprisingly this is the only book on this true New Orleans´great, by some regarded as important to New Orleans Music as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton a o.

If you want a copy of this most interesting book, contact Per on peroldaeus@hotmail.com.

And finally we as always concluded the meeting with great live New Orleans jazz performed by Christer Fellers, Per Oldaueus and their happy pals. Thank you guys for a great concert. See you all again in 2016.
