THE KID´S MAILBOX-2
13 August 2012
I have a Kid Ory story I can share. In 1965 I was playing in a jazz band on Bourbon Street, New Orleans (where else) and had been working with the
famous Danny Barker. I didn't realize until several years later that he was a jazz Icon. What did I know, it was my first time in the city and I had a lot to learn.
As it turned out, Danny was the curator of the New Orleans Jazz Museumand one night after finishing a night of playing he invited me and a trumpet player named George Finola to the museum for a look around. I found one of Kid Ory's trombones, and decided to play it. It played so bad, the inner slide was raw brass not nickel plated like they are now. I simply couldn't imagine how Ory played so fast and fluid on this horn.He really was a master player and can't imagine how he would have played on a better or more modern horn.
Not much of a story, but thought you might have an interest.
